Venus spits fire!

New probes of the surface of (#ad) Venus show a few glowing spots on the inner world of our neighboring planet. The European ESA space probe "Venus Express", in orbit since April 2006, found a surprising evidence of still-active volcanoes.
Currently Venus is a glaringly bright "star" good to see in the early evening sky. In the moment you can see its calm, white gloss over the western horizon, dominating the twilight.
Knowledge about (#ad) Venus are particularly interesting because this planet is similar to our earth, especially in the size. Nevertheless, it has mostly completely different properties that are not solely due to the lower sun distance. So what happened, that this in principle very similar worlds developed so far apart?
